PSHE

What is PSHE and SRE?

PSHE stands for Personal, Social and Health Education. It covers the education of the whole child and the choices they make. SRE stands for Sex and Relationship Education and is a compulsory part of this policy. SRE is integrated into the key concepts of PSHE.

Our definition for KS2: PSHE is learning about how to keep ourselves safe and healthy, physically and emotionally as well as understanding differences.

Our definition for Foundation and KS1: PSHE is learning about ourselves.

We want our children to leave North Somercotes CE Primary School being resilient, responsible, respectful citizens. Every day we encourage our children to “Let their Light Shine”. We also want our children to ‘broaden their horizons’ and have knowledge of the world outside our school, including different faiths and religions and different relationships. We intend for our children to be emotionally intelligent; able to understand their own feelings and emotions and be fully equipped to deal with various emotional situations.

At North Somercotes we have introduced a whole school PSHE scheme called Jigsaw. Jigsaw combines PSHE, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development.

Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. This enables each Puzzle to start with an introductory assembly, generating a whole school focus for adults and children alike. Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

There are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) each with six Pieces (lessons). Every year group studies the same Puzzle at the same time (sequentially ordered from September to July), allowing for whole school themes and the end of Puzzle product to be celebrated by the whole school.

The different puzzle pieces are:

Sex & Relationships Education

An important part of the Jigsaw PSHE programme is delivered through the 'Relationships' and 'Changing Me' puzzle pieces which are covered in the summer term.

There are four main aims of teaching SRE:

• To enable children to understand and respect their bodies
• To help children develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age and development
• To support children to have positive self-esteem and body image
• To empower them to be safe and safeguarded.

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) Education is of vital importance at our school. We are passionate about offering every child in our school a broad and balanced SMSC curriculum as they embrace the wider life of our school. Our SMSC Map gives a snapshot in time of how our school develops this for all children.
